How Hiding Yourself From God is Hurting You and What to Do Instead

Sep 22, 2014 | 8 comments

There are a lot of people living behind masks every day I’m not talking about the masks that you wear on Halloween, I’m talking about the masks that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

They hide their true selves from others.

They may hide behind fake smiles, makeup, or material things in the world.

Meanwhile, on the inside, they’re extremely insecure or, they’re going through a personal problem.

Some people go as far as hiding their true self from the Lord because they feel ashamed and unworthy of His love.

My Confession

On a personal note, I hide behind a mask more than I’d like to admit sometimes. I try to wear a smile all the time in public no matter what I might be going through.

When someone asks me how I’m doing, I say that I’m doing great. However, a lot of the time, things in my life are in disarray.

I’m not saying that my actions are horrible. I’m just saying that I need to be more true to myself.

When someone asks me how I’m doing, I can always respond by saying that I’m blessed regardless of how I’m feeling.

That’s because no matter what my feelings are, that’s truly who I am – a blessed child of God.

I can continue smiling because I know God loves me despite of my shortcomings.

I remember a nun at my college telling the class that when someone asks you how you’re doing, they’re only asking to be polite, and not because they truly want to know how you’re doing.

That statement stuck with me my entire life.

Unfortunately, that is true with most of society. However, with God, we don’t have to hide.

I choose to reveal myself to the Lord wholeheartedly no matter how hard it may be sometimes.

Free Yourself

The Lord doesn’t care about masks, He already knows the true you!

Since He is omniscient (all-knowing), the revealing is for you, and not for Him.

Bare your soul to Him because it shows that you trust Him.  Tell Him everything – your fears, pain, and desires. The more you reveal to Him, the more He will reveal to you.

I can testify that God is the God that can remove your fears and your pain. Then He can turn your dreams into reality.

The Big Reveal

Take off the mask! Reveal yourself!

The Lord loves you regardless of your faults.

Rely solely on God’s opinion of you, and not on the world’s opinion of you.

Once you open yourself up completely to the Lord, you’ll feel like a load has been lifted from your shoulders.

It is sooo freeing!

John 8:32 “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Wow, what a great post Wendelin!

I too used to hide myself behind a mask when it came to my relationship with the Lord. It was early on in my relationship with Him, at a time when I thought that God was always mad at me.

But when I learned that God loves me despite of who I am, and that He knows all of the future sins that I will commit and that He still chooses to stick with me, that’s when my view of God changed. I began sharing with Him my heart, and it was such a big blessing for me to be able to do that.

What a great article! I have come to see that the best way I can stop hiding from myself, and from God, is through journaling. When I write my insecurities down, discussing my fears and pains in detail, God shows me ways of thinking that help me get rid of the insecurity, and it does indeed feel like a huge load has been lifted.
