Gail Mays

“ But God...”

Gail Mays is the wife of Pastor Steve Mays, from Calvary Chapel South Bay located in Southern California in the Los Angeles area. Pastor Steve was taught under Pastor Chuck Smith and is featured in the book “Harvest.” He has been a vital part of Calvary Chapel ministry for over 30 years. Steve and Gail were saved at the height of the revival known as “The Jesus Movement.” They met through one of the Christian House Ministries of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa just shortly after they were saved, and it wasn’t long before they were married. Steve ran several of these Christian houses for about 8 years before going on and pastoring a Calvary Chapel of his own. Steve and Gail have been at Calvary Chapel South Bay for thirty years now.

It’s hard to believe, when you look at Gail now, that she was once a flower child very involved in the hippie movement, selling and taking drugs. Her life is a powerful testimony of how God can take a life ruined by the world and transform it into something that can be used for His glory and honor. She calls her testimony “But God.” She recounts how over and over in her life she was going one way BUT GOD intervened and wonderfully rescued her!

Gail has three children and seven grandchildren. Her children are now grown and out on their own so she has plenty of time to devote to the work of the Lord! Though she’s involved in a variety of things, the one thing she loves to do most is to minister to women. She has a heart for them and their unique calling of God. She takes every opportunity to instruct them in the Word of God, believing that it alone has the power to change a life!
